Back Yes, I should have mentioned that.
One the server, I check /var/log/messages and didn't see anything. On the EL4 WS, I get the following entry:
login[2856]: pam_ldap: ldap_starttls_s: Connect error
That's why I assumed it was not able to connect to LDAP using TLS...
