Which means of course that if one wants to run software which requires kernel patching (like RTAI or RTLinux) one is going to have to fall back to a stock kernel. The RH patched kernels are largely a good thing, but for lab computers I'm seriously thinking about Gentoo or Ubuntu; i.e., a distro which uses the stock kernels by default.
