I love rsync but there are a few gotchas. I've had trouble using -z between RHEL 3 and FC3 (apparently there is a known bug in the way rsync uses zlib, but at least one of these distributions does not have the fix). You can use -e 'ssh -C' instead. Also, if you want to make the destination look *just* like the source, you may need a few not necessarily obvious command line options (read the man page carefully).
