Sharing a Printer with CUPS in RHEL AS3

Sharing a Printer with CUPS in RHEL AS3

Hello All,

I've looked through the documentation pretty comprehensively on this one
without any success so hopefully somebody on the list can help me.

I've added a HP Laserjet 4V printer to a RHEL AS3 server machine (call this
server1). This printer has a JetDirect card and is accessed by server1 using
this card's IP address / port 9100. Printing from server1 to this printer
works fine. Now, I want to share out this printer with CUPS so that I can
use server1 as a print server. However, no matter which interface I use
(redhat-config-printer, http://localhost:631 or Print Manager in the
toolbar), I can't seem to get an interface / GUI which will allow me to
create a path to a CUPS queue (e.g. /printers/my_shared_printer) thereby
allowing me to add this printer on a client machine; obviously all client
machines need a path to the queue on the remote printer in order to add a
queue shared from that printer.

I can successfully add a printer to a client machine by

(i) Enabling lpd protocol on the server machine (i.e. share as an lpd queue
rather than CUPS queue).
(ii) Adding the printer (using the JetDirect Card's IP address, port 9100)
to each client machine.

However, I would prefer to use CUPS... so my question is :

Can I share this JetDirect printer as a CUPS queue from server1 and if so,
how do I set it up i.e. how can I secifiy a CUPS queue path?

Thanks in advance,
John Kelly.
