Jeffery, It can be beneficial if your name server has capacity problems leading to high latency. Given your environment you could make a quick mod to /etc/nscd.conf and disable passwd and group caching and run nscd with just host caching which can provide speed increases with lots of repeatative lookups (ie. graphics intensive web pages) but in general I run with nscd off in non-enterprise environments particularly when I've got a fast name server nearby.
