The way I've dealt with this is to use Maildir and NFS mount the
directories for mail delivery (generally delivery to a Maildir in the
user's home dir). It's possible to NFS mount an mbox mail spool, but
it's not usually considered a good idea - any problems with NFS file
locking could result in lost or corrupted mail.

Anecdotally, I've seen mbox mail spools mounted via NFS with a fairly
large user base with no major problems - however we intentionally
switched to Maildir when we revamped our mail system architecture.
