up2date tries to batch all of the updates at once, and each package has
its own free space requirements, so it tries to make sure that it has
enough free space available to statisy all packages' requirements at
once. If you have a lot of updates to install, this requires a lot of
space.
The easiest workaround is to update a few packages at a time. Try
running "up2date openoffice.org" or "up2date XFree86" to update a few of
the larger packages; hopefully then you'll have enough space to do the rest.
