Oh, now I understand why it had customnetworks.ca twice. I knew that
looked wrong, but I didn't know why.

Yes, I was experimenting trying to get it working. I read that the
origin was stated in the named.conf file, and I could substitute an @,
but I was trying to get it working and thought that might help.

Since I built the file from scratch, I thought that
thom.customnetworks.ca. would be my email address for who to contact
regarding the zone file. Shoule it have an @ in it or is this file now
correct with the changes I put in?
