I believe you may have misinterpreted the question. If you have a Red Hat Linux system, you may still install over software that is not rpm based. > I am assuimg SRPMs are used to install the software?
No - you'd install from a tarball.

It's a serious question. If you have /usr/local/bin/foo, and foo does not belong to any rpm you installed, how did it get there and how do you know if there's a new version?
