This doesn't sound as if the question was phrased like that. Unless the used terminology is a bit weird and, e.g., "package = tarball". Because if you don't have package management software installed, you don't use packages either. If however you install from tar archives, for instance, it would be a common thing to keep a session log of each of your installation activities.

No. Source RPMs create binary RPMs and hence need at least rpm2cpio or, well, rpm to install them. For the former you need to keep logs again as the RPM database is not used. > Is this actually possible?
