kernel-debuginfo packages

kernel-debuginfo packages

Hi:

- I could build the kernel-debuginfo-2.4.21-20.EL.i686.rpm package from
the source RPM kernel-2.4.21-20.EL.src.rpm using rpmbuild.

- Installed the newly built kernel-2.4.21-20.EL.i686.rpm and
kernel-debuginfo-2.4.21-20.EL.i686.rpm packages on a test machine.

- Took a test dump, and could analyze the "vmcore" file and the live
system. No issues.

The link
http://people.redhat.com/anderson/crash_whitepaper/index.html#toc was
very useful for getting started on analyzing dumps.

So far so good.

Now when I run "crash /tmp/vmlinux-2.4.21-20.ELsmp vmcore", where vmcore
and /tmp/vmlinux-2.421-20.ELsmp are copied from a different test machine
running Red Hat shipped 2.4.21-20.ELsmp kernel, "crash" utility returns
the following error:
-- ---- ---- ---- ---
crash: /usr/lib/debug/boot/vmlinux-2.4.21-20.ELsmp.debug: CRC does not
match
crash: /tmp/vmlinux-2.4.21-20.ELsmp: no debugging data available
-- ---- ---- ---- ---

What could be the difference between Red Hat shipped version of the
kernel and the kernel built from the sources, given (of course) that the
kernel version and the architecture (i686) are same.

I appreciate any clarification/advice.

Regards,
Jayaram.

Subject: kernel-debuginfo packages

Hi:

I am trying to analyze a "vmcore" generated (by diskdump) on a machine
running RHEL v3 U3 using crash utility.

I looked for RHEL v3.0 U3 kernel-debuginfo package
(kernel-debuginfo-2.4.21-20.EL.i386.rpm) in Red Hat Network.  The
package search for "kernel-debuginfo" yields only link to
kernel-debuginfo-2.4.21-4.0.1.EL.i386.rpm.  I don't see it in RHEL3 U3
CDs(1-4) as well.  Any pointers?

Thanks in advance,

Regards,
Jayaram.
