Perl 5.8.0 might have been broken from perl.org, but the Perl included in RHEL is not straight from opensource. Red Hat applies security and bug fixes (backported from later releases). If you know of something specifically broken in perl 5.8.0 in RHEL, please open a bugzilla. Red Hat should back-port a fix for any serious bugs and release it in an errata.
