The only way that I am aware of to pinpoint system time is to use a tool like oprofile. I think for this to work well you have to have the kernel-debuginfo package installed. So far I've not had good success trying to get oprofile to work correctly with Redhat kernels but it may be my inexperience with the package.
Perhaps some others on the list can chime in on their methods for looking into these types of issues as I would also be very interested.
