What does
service rhnsd status
tell you?
How about
service rhnsd restart

rhnsd was up and running with the service rhnsd status. The restart did shutdown and restart the daemon under a new pid. However, that did not change the situation for reporting in to rhn. Another note, manually running rhn_check also did not actually produce any results.
What actually did work to solve this one was to remove the local certificate, /etc/sysconfig/rhn/systemid, and reregister the system with Red Hat Network. Fortunately, I had entitlements available to do this. I guess I could have deleted the system entitlement, too, prior to the reregistration. What I don't understand is "Why?" does this correct the problem.
