Have you tried the KDE packages from http://kde-redhat.sf.net? They provide binary RPMs (yum and apt repos) for RHEL 3 and 4. KDE 3.4.2 is in their testing repository now and I'm sure it will be considered stable in the coming weeks.
I have not used their latest packages, but I have integrated their work into Red Hat 7.3 about 2 years ago (at the time, KDE 3.1.4 on top of RH 7.3). It worked like a charm.
I do not know of a similar project for GNOME.
