When you tell VMware to attach the PDA you should get a popup window
that says something on the order of: The device seems to be claimed by
another driver (some-driver).........

Comparing the output of lsmod before and after plugging in devices may
also be useful.

Have you tried rmmod some-driver?

It works for my usb disk.

The problem, of course, would be a device in use by the host OS needing
the driver for a device that you want to use on the host OS would stop
working.
