Thanks for the fast response Kevin.
No joy i'm afraid:

root@(protected) log# service mysqld start
Timeout error occurred trying to start MySQL Daemon.
Starting MySQL:                                            [FAILED]
root@(protected) log# ps -ef | grep sql
root      4208  2097  0 16:38 pts/0    00:00:00 grep sql

root@(protected) log# tail mysqld.log
slow_launch_time      current value: 2
sort_buffer           current value: 2097144
table_cache           current value: 64
thread_concurrency    current value: 10
thread_cache_size     current value: 0
tmp_table_size        current value: 33554432
thread_stack          current value: 65536
wait_timeout          current value: 28800
050929 16:37:54  mysqld ended

As it happens, I did a dump of the db's earlier so I saved the day by importing
them
into a test box I have running Centos 4, it will do for now but it's not a
permanent
solution.
