Well, thanks for the suggestions everyone, I did give the strace a try but couldn't see any clues in the output. In the end I decided to reinstall the server & upgrade to rhel4 in the process, that gave me kernel problems which is a story in itself, in short, I now have a server running rhel4 with the latest fc3 kernel... yes yes, I know - support infringment & all that but I hit this bug:
