Back You can run updated versions of software without having updates from RedHat. But, please be cautious with this. As you've already seen, you can and will muck up your system.
When I absolutley must run a newer version of software, and RedHat hasn't released an RPM for it, I obtain the source file and build it myself. I usually deposit it in /usr/local/????, as a separate release and point any dependancies to the new version. In the case of OpenOffice, you will just obtain the binary release and install it in /usr/local/.
