Risking sounding like a salesman for the company, we use a device from
Cybernetics, the MiSAN.  8 SATA drive bays, web and telnet interfaces,
iSCSI target.  It emulates tape drives or tape changers, and can be set
to automatically copy the vitual tape to a locally attached tape drive
(or changer).  Their web site is ... lacking, but you can get a general
idea.  Their product "just works"; I had it up and running in no time.
