Login problem

     Greetings all.  First post here.

I have a problem which was intermittant, but has now become not so.

One of mys AS3 systems is now refusing to allow anyone to logon.
This problem exists whether I am trying to logon via console, KDM or SSH.

On the console, I enter my login(root fails as well) and my
password.  Press return and that's it.  Out to lunch.  I get no message
stating that my login attempt has failed.  Booting the rescue disk, I
see nothing in any of the log files in /var/log.  I don't see any
evidence that that a login was even attempted.  Even the Netbackup
remote console doesn't work.  But backups seem to be working.  It's
sending me emails saying that all is well.

The disks aren't full.  The shadow and password file don't look
corrupted.  I checked /etc/pam.d/system-auth and it looks fine.  I ran
authconfig to make sure.  nsswitch looks ok too.  I ran rpm -Va and
nothing obvious popped up.

What's funky is that Nagios queries using NRPE work fine.  It's as
if anything that requires some sort of authentication is failing.

I'm at a loss.  I am going to try to force a reinstall of bash,
login or PAM.  Really, this smells like a PAM issue.

Any ideas anyone?  I don't want to reinstall the system.  It's my
backup server and it'll be painfull.

Chris...
