Which kernel?  The RHEL3/4 kernel?  A vanilla kernel from kernel.org?  Why
were you recompiling?  What patch did you apply and from where?  You need
to explain more about what your trying to do (e.g. I've got this new usb
gadget and the vendor has a linux driver but it's not included in RHEL4
kernel so I tried patching...)
