        These r the steps I followed
 1.make mrproper
 2.make xconfig
 3.make dep
 4.make clean
 5.make bzImage
 6.make modules.(error)

did you start with "make mrproper"?

if not.. the kernel-source rpm comes "prepared" for external module
builds; but the 2.4 build system is such that that breaks building from
scratch unless you start out with mrproper!
