Dell PowerEdge 1655MC HD issues with RHEL3

Dell PowerEdge 1655MC HD issues with RHEL3

Hi all,

We have a few Dell PowerEdge 1655MC (blade) servers since a couple of
years (or more).
In the last months we have seen a high failure rate for HDs, e.g.
three PE1655MC servers out of six experienced an HD failure.

Here is how the mpt-status utility looks like with a failed HD in the
RAID 1 array:

# ./mpt-status
ioc0 vol_id 0 type IM, 2 phy, 16 GB, state DEGRADED, flags ENABLED
ioc0 phy 0 scsi_id 0 SEAGATE  ST318453LW       6E03, 16 GB, state
ONLINE, flags NONE
ioc0 phy 1 scsi_id 1 SEAGATE  ST318453LW       6E03, 16 GB, state
FAILED, flags OUT_OF_SYNC

We have a lot of other servers from Dell (e.g. PowerEdge 1650, 1850,
etc.) and we never experienced such high failure rate for HDs.

What are your experiences with PE1655MC servers?

The servers are running RHEL3 U5 and U6.
Could it be a software issue with the Linux mpt driver?

Any advice?

Thanks.
