SCSI devices and device reordering 2006-01-11 - By Guy Waugh
Back Hi folks,
I'm having a problem with SCSI devices and their ordering (I think). I have a Dell 6650 with a QLogic HBA attached to a HP EVA3000 SAN. The box runs RHEL3U6. The box has an inbuilt SCSI controller (using the 'megaraid' driver) and internal disks, and before a short while ago, all the local (megaraid) partitions were on the device /dev/sda.
I presented 2 SAN disks to the box and rebooted, and suddenly the local disk has become /dev/sdc. I unpresented one of the two SAN disks, rebooted the box again, and the local disk has become /dev/sdb.
I have a few other Dell boxes with QLogic HBAs (1850s and 2650s), and this doesn't happen on them - when I present a SAN disk and reboot, the local disk always stays as /dev/sda.
I'm thinking it is probably because of the fact that, on the 6650, the megaraid SCSI controller has a Host value of 2 (from /proc/scsi/megaraid), where the QLogic HBA has a Host value of 1 (from /proc/scsi/qla2300) (excuse me if I've got the 'Host value' terminology wrong). On the other boxes, the megaraid SCSI controller has a Host value of 1, and the QLogic HBA has a Host value of 2.
I suspect that this is quite a common problem, but I can't locate any info on what to do about it (probably not using the right search terms). Can I do anything about it?
Can anyone suggest what I might do to keep the local disk as /dev/sda, or point me at relevant info?
Thanks, Guy.
