It worked for about 6 months.  The first indication of a problem was
nfs-mounted shares from another server was not available.  The problem
was that /var was full.  I corrected that problem and was able to mount
the nfs shares.  It was at this time that I noticed the logon problem.

Did this ever work for you on this machine?  I suspect you need to tweak
gdm.conf to allow XDMCP connections.  /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf [xdmcp]
section.  You need to say "Enabled=true".  The default is false.

You also need to edit /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess to specify which hosts or
subnets are allowed to connect.  For a wide-open (not recommended)
configuration, uncomment the line "# *  #any host can get a login
window".

You then need to restart gdm.  One way of doing this is to login via
SSH, run "telinit 3", then "telinit 5".
