USB External Disk/Hub Problem

USB External Disk/Hub Problem

I've been trying to get a Western Digital external USB hard drive
working with a RHEL 3 WS system (kernel 2.4.21-37.ELsmp).  This system
is a Dell Precision Workstation 530 (3 internal SCSI disks).  I mention
the SCSI disks, because I've gotten this USB disk to work fine on other
IDE-based systems (e.g. Dell Optiplex GX260).  The complete output from
/var/log/messages when I try to connect the device to the Precision
Workstation is listed at the bottom of this message.  I *believe* the
most pertinent lines may be:

Jan 16 09:01:30 saimiri kernel: usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout

and/or

Jan 16 09:01:57 saimiri kernel: usb-storage: Refusing to reset a
multi-interface device
Jan 16 09:02:08 saimiri kernel: scsi: device set offline - not ready or
command retry failed after bus reset: host 3 channel 0 id 0 lun 0

I've tried manually unloading and loading the USB modules, upgrading the
machine's BIOS, and using the latest RHEL 3 beta kernel.  Any ideas on
what else I might try?

Thanks.
