I guess the problem here is the X server cannot make contact with the display
manager. Your X starts up fine after you are logged in to runleve 3 because you
authentication is already done.
can you check if your display manager is running

ps -ef | grep dm
or
netstat -ap | grep xdmcp


Also check out the section
/etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf for XDMCP setting.
