I don't know if it was brought up, but it could also be his network settings.
XWindows, even local to the box needs to be able to talk to itself on an IP level. If your network settings are messed up, your computer will still start in to a GUI, but it will respond dog slow. Sometimes with no error message, telling you why it is running slow.
