v40z 's and booting from usb cdrom 2006-02-16 - By Illtud Daniel
Back In case anybody's following this with interest (or more likely, googling it in years to come), Sun has come back with "network boot only option on 6-disk v40z", and our workaround has been:
Open the box. Get the connector which used to connect to the DVD/floppy unit (single IDC-style connector for IDE, floppy & power). Extend the connector out through the unsightly hole left by removing the DVD/floppy connector. Hide the connector behind the front panel until you need to plug it into the retained DVD/floppy unit to boot from CD.
Not pretty, but the routes to getting SCSI/IDE all the way back to the backplane weren't easy, and this way also supplies power.
