KDE on Linux logout issue

The OS of this server is:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 3 (Taroon Update 6)
Kernel 2.4.21-32.0.1.ELsmp on an i686

Problem:
- When I try to logout, it takes 2 attempts, the first does not "take"
and it seems the system ignored the logout request. This happens using
either the logout from the toolbar or the kde menu.
