Oops - I can't read! I tried installing that kernel, and rpm reported that I don't have an athalon. I don't know why my 62 year old memory has flaws, but it apparently does. My new cpu is actually an Intel Celeron D 340 2.93Ghz processor, and the old kernel reports it as an i686, so I still have the same problem.
