usually this is due to the system-config-display tool not recognising
your monitor properly. On my dell d800 I had to reconfigure this as well.

so, run 'system-config-display'
you should see 'unknown monitor'
click on the hardware tab, configure your monitor.
you can find a suitable model under
Generic LCD -> LCD Panel 1680x1050

then choose the resolution/colour depth you want on the Settings tab.
click OK

exit
log out of X.

or preferably, guarantee a reconfig by
CTRL-ALT-F1
log in as root
init 3
CTRL-ALT-F1
init5;exit
