Trying kicking off the installation with "mem=512M" or something to that effect. We've seen a couple of cases where ACPI probing is causing problems with installations and the footprint is that the machines freeze during formatting. What's actually happening in the background is that all of the memory is getting eaten up. I haven't seen this reported on a Dell so can't guarantee this will fix your problem but give it a try.
