Depends on where you get your packages from.
Often, packaging is done *very* poorly, a reason why I never installed a contrib package (or now a Fedora extras package) without looking at the spec file and sometimes redoing the whole packaging.
In short: you have to do your own QA or you have a good chance of making a mess out of your system pretty fast...
