Okay, I twiddled with the X output log to see why X won't even come up with an nVidia card. It says there's a resource already in use. I finally figured out that it's the PCI:3,0,0 (?) line, so I removed that but still Monitor1 fails to even come up. At least on ATI it showed GUI with a valid mouse pointer, but no viewable anything else. Yes, it does sound like a driver, but I've installed ATI drivers with no success...
I'm hoping an update works for both the gnome freezing thing and dual head...
