Correct. diskdruid doesn't go past the hub. If you directly connect the drive to a USB port, it should work.
If you open up ALT-F3 (or whatever console has the shell prompt) and do a "lsusb", you'll see the ID numbers and names of the devices. Then use "lsusb -t", you'll see the tree of the USB system. diskdruid won't go below the first branches on those trees.
