No, that's not the problem. The system was specifically whining about device major 10, minor 134 (which is the apm_bios device under the V2.4 kernel). Since nvidia's module does link in with apm (advanced power management) to blank the screen and such, I suspect that's what happened. As to the major device 195, that is the major device number assigned to nvidia and should be created on-the-fly when X fires up the nvidia module.
