Exactly. yum/apt/smart for RHEL3/4 are rather useless w/o having an appropriate source. The only openly available sources are third party repos.
You can argue that therefore these depsolvers are of no use to RHEL3/4, but users can either use a mixed depsolver setup (access Red Hat bits through RHN, 3rd parties through yum/smart/apt) or access everything though a locally created repo.

No, yum is just a tool, not a content provider.

Because yum cannot access RHN content (yet?). You don't pay for up2date as a program but for the availability of the packages through RHN. Just like you don't pay for a browser, but for the content that is displayed through it. -- Axel.Thimm at ATrpms.net
