Unless the DS4100 has arbitration logic, you can't simply hook two systems up to it and expect it to work. It's not a network...each system expects to have the disks to itself and they're colliding. Its the same thing as plugging two computers onto an external SCSI disk...they'll collide.
You need to see if the DS4100 has arbitration logic and if so, you have to configure it. If not, you need to look at something like GFS (global file system) which allows multiple systems to share storage.
